She did it!

Last night, Issa did it:

She had a solo pointe lesson because everyone else was out of town, and she finally nailed her pirouette consistently! And...she had enough she probably could have doubled it! She is so thrilled! I love watching her tackle new things and celebrate when she succeeds!

Twenty Years

This morning, we snuck out for an anniversary breakfast:
20 years ago, these two kids walked into a life with zero idea of what was ahead of them:
We had no idea we were moving to North Carolina permanently, that I would end up with a doctorate, too, that Brad would be an entrepreneur. We had big dreams and no idea what we were doing. Thankfully, we have grown together and grown up together. We still have no idea what the future holds, but we have a little better idea about how to do life. Thankfully, we still feel the same way as we did that day:
Here's to many, many more anniversaries and adventures together.

Quiet

We had a much-needed quiet weekend. Issa finished her driver's ed. The boys spent time at the dojo. We rested.

We were quiet, and I'm very much still in that place. I'm gutted by the Supreme Court decision on Friday. Very rarely do I feel helpless, but I did on Friday. I'm still searching for the words and the next right thing, but please don't take my silence for complacency. I've just learned in my 42 years that sometimes it's best to not say the first things that come to mind.

I'm headed to the ocean on Saturday, and I don't think I've ever needed it more than I do right now. Hearing the waves and feeling so very small always brings much-needed perspective and clarity. After the last two months, I'm looking forward to the space to process and be.

God Wink

The past 24 hours have held some major milestones for our girl.

She is officially enrolled in her first Durham Tech class. She bought her first college textbook, and she logged on to the learning management system. I was ready to help, but the college counselor had done a great job with orientation and Issa flew through the process. It is so cool to watch her take that next step in her education, but it is bitter sweet to just be a spectator.

Brad dropped her off for her first set of driving hours this morning. We were all nervous! Issa was worried about driving on an actual road, and Brad and I were nervous to be sending her out in a car with someone we didn't know. When the instructor walked up, he was wearing a Northern High School shirt. Coach Spell and I worked together, and he is a great man and an even better driver's ed instructor. All of her hours will be with either Coach Spell or Coach Rodeo, another great man I used to to teach with. I'm a little worried about the stories they might tell, but I'm so, so glad that her time behind the wheel will be with those two men.

Happy Father's Day!

We had a fabulous weekend celebrating our favorite dad! Friday night, we started the weekend with make your own pizza and movie night! I think we are now doing make your own pizza night every Friday for the foreseeable future.

Saturday, Brad and I met Ryan and Emily for dinner and then went to DPAC to see Jesus Christ Superstar:
The production is definitely in my top ten if not top five!

Yesterday, though, was the big day! The boys still went to the dojo in the morning since Brad is testing for his black belt in just a few weeks. That gave Issa and I time to run to Mom's house to grab the gifts we had stashed there:

When we went to the Lego store in Chicago, Brad almost bought himself the bonsai tree kit. The kids remembered and ordered the kit for him:
We also got him a mini fridge for his office/man cave in the garage:
After the boys showered, we took Brad to brunch at the Colonial Inn:
It's a lovely model where you preorder, so when you are seated your meal arrives in less than ten minutes, and it was really good!

We went straight from brunch to the high school parking lot:

Issa finished the course work for driver's ed last week, and she does the driving portion this week. We didn't think the first time behind the wheel should be then! Brad is an amazing driving teacher:
I, however, got kicked out of the car for yelling, "BREAK!" She did really well, though, and is feeling confident for this week!

When we got home Brad and Issa ran to the store to stock the mini fridge, and we spent the rest of the day just relaxing together. Brad did build his bonsai:

It was a really lovely day celebrating our very favorite!

End of an Era

I've mentioned several times that we are slowly redoing our whole backyard. I had delusions that it would be completed this summer, but everything is just taking longer than I thought it would. There are more trees and vines to remove than I thought, and it just seems to be a lot more work than I imagined. But! We are slowly chipping away!

Next week, Issa and I are going to put the yard into her design program and come up with a complete vision and plan. I need that carrot as we are in the depths of the really hard work.

Evan has become my yard buddy. He is really strong and really helpful! Yesterday, we crossed a bit item off the list:
That would be the old sandbox out at the curb for bulk pick-up. We dug out the very little sand that was left, and then we had to unearth the sandbox itself; it had really settled in after 20 years. There is no way I could have done it by myself, but it feels to good to see a major item removed. Onward...

A Weird Phase of Parenting

It is official summer! We celebrated the start of summer Friday with glowing cups and floating cotton candy:
We also celebrated with family pedicures:
This is a very different summer for us. Issa is in driver's ed this week, and for the first time we are having to adjust our schedules around the kids' jobs. Issa has a pretty full-time babysitting gig, and Evan is stringing together pet sitting jobs:
He really is a dog whisperer:
And I don't mind being the driver and getting some extra snuggles:
We had the bonus of seeing this mama dear:
And her sweet fawn:
The kids are really independent and fun to hang out with when no one is working. It's kind of nice to be in this phase where they can be a bit more independent. I think I'll take it.

A Thing of Beauty

I don't usually come into the office on Fridays in the summer, but I'm here today, and the view from my office is pretty spectacular:

I just brought the orchid in today, and I have high hopes of keeping it alive!

Back at the Barre

Last night, I finally got to go back to adult ballet! I missed it when I was teaching Monday nights this semester.

The really fun thing is Issa and two of her friends are joining the class this summer! They are using it to warm up before their pointe lessons. It is so fun to take a class with them.

In so many ways, the barre will always be home for me, and I love being there with my girl.

What Teachers Make

I taught the last content session of my three-week intensive this morning. They will be in the field for the next two days, and I will have plenty of grading coming in. But this morning was the last time we will all be together.

This course is brutal for all involved. By the last week I am willing people across the finish line. I loved teaching this group, but we will all be glad when this one is behind us.

After I wrapped the course and launched them on their way, two of them stayed behind. Both wanted me to know that my class was challenging--the hardest they had ever taken. That I made them think really intently about questions that don't have absolute answers. Both loved the class.

See. That's why I do what I do--why all good teachers do it. We make students do what they think they can't. We set the bar impossibly high and then cheer when they clear it. We make them hate us and love us at the same time. That moment at the end of the class...that moment makes everything else worth it.

Such Joy

The last week of dance classes, the studio brought in a photographer to take some solo and group shots. We had lots from throughout the season, but it's always nice to get a few more formal pictures. It was an added bonus that the photographer used to dance with Issa, so they also took some really fun pictures!

Look at this girl on pointe:
And I love, love, love the joy captured in these ballet photos:

I love that they just had fun, which was a characteristic of the year:
And this picture stole my heart:
It has been the greatest gift to see Issa rediscover the pure joy of dance, and I love seeing these friends create that joy together...

Life, the Universe, and Everything

In Hitchiker's Guide to the Universe, they build a computer that can determine the meaning of Life, the Universe, and Everything. The answer the machine eventually gives is simple: 42.

Today begins my forty-second year. While I certainly haven't unlocked the meaning of life, I do think 42 is a pretty great number.

I still feel like I have a ton of life ahead of me, but this year I've noticed the subtle shift into a new phase of life.

Professionally, I've shifted from being one of the mentored to being more of a mentor. I certainly still have my own mentors! But...they aren't in the office anymore. Instead of walking down the hall for institutional memory, I'm asked for it. I doubt myself less. It's odd, but it also feels right.

Personally, I feel great! I know who I am. I know which hills I will die on, but I no longer feel the need to join every fray. I know I'm not everyone's cup of tea, and I'm truly okay with that. I have my tribe, and that is enough.

I have high hopes for this year. Here's to 42...

A Very Busy Weekend

This weekend was a bit of a blur! Friday, we were downtown for Last Fridays, where Issa and her team performed. The location was a last minute call because of some weather, so while the teachers were moving sound equipment the high school team jumped in to lead a stretch:
And rehearse the littles:
I am so impressed by how Monarch has really empowered the older girls to be real leaders, and I love watching them do their thing together:
Saturday, we went to see Hamilton at DPAC:
We were supposed to go in December 2020, and we were so thrilled to finally be able to go! This cast was the best I have seen, and we all loved it! We rushed from there to go to Issa's end of season soiree at the studio! It was a very lovely potluck with superlatives and a killer slide show of the year. It was so wild to watch the studio go from a sign and tap in Stephanie's driveway to a full studio performing for the community.

Sunday, we went into Durham to see the Nasher Art Museum, and these three recreated a part of the film Issa and her team made here last fall:

It was a great museum followed by even better Ethiopian food! We wanted to something new with Aunt Shannon before she flew back to Chicago yesterday, and we will definitely be back!

Yesterday was a weird one in which Brad and I did not work but the kids did. I took Evan to meet the dogs he is dog sitting for a couple weeks this summer, and Issa spent the entire day at her new nannying job!

This is Issa's last week of school, and Evan is down to the last 8 days! We are going to make it!

I'm Tired

I've been struggling for three days to find words. Another school shooting. Two teachers killed protecting their kiddos. 19 kiddos.

I've written about this in the past--unfortunately. Every teacher you know has a plan. We know how we will block the door--probably in multiple ways. We know exactly where the site lines are from the door. We have thought about how we will blockade our students. We know our fight or flight point. We know the plans the protocols the codes. We also know we will 100% put ourselves between a bullet and our students. That doesn't mean we aren't scared as hell this week. Jumpy. Having hard conversations with our families.

I've talked my kids through it. Reminding them that their teachers have plans. That I believe they are safe at school. And I've cried every morning after drop off.

For the first time, I've cried every morning in the parking lot at work. I'm teaching an intro class right now. We've spent the first part of class talking this through. What are school procedures. Why they aren't posted and why schools don't respond to idiots on social media spouting inaccurate information about their plans. We've talked about how they have to be the centered adult in the room, and I've modeled that even though I haven't felt that way at my core. I sent them into schools today knowing they are a little more nervous than usual. I am, too.

I have always been and will always be a teacher. But I'm tired. I'm tired of the load we carry. I'm tired of the blame we take for things that we have no control over. I'm tired of the shouting about us and at us. I'm tired, and I'm not alone.

When you hear people complaining that their kiddo's classroom has a long-term sub because there just aren't any teachers, this is why. It's not because we don't love kids. It's not because we don't love teaching. The $37,000 starting salary is insulting but unfortunately we know what we signed up for. It's this. We have born the burden of picking up the pieces of a pandemic while being told it's our fault the kids are struggling. We have been asked to cram more instruction into kids who have desperate social, emotional, and behavioral needs. We have not been given the resources or staff we need to do the work. And to top it off we just watched two of our colleagues die, and we know it could have been us. And nothing will change.

If you have read this far, I'm begging you to do something. Thoughts and prayers alone aren't going to fix this. I believe we need tighter gun control laws and better mental health care services. I've written my representatives to ask for both. I would love for you to do the same. If you know and love a teacher, know they are not okay--even if they say they are. Give us a little grace. And for the love of all that is good and holy, don't debate with us right now. Until you have been in that classroom the day after a shooting, until you have been responsible for 30 children who you know have families that love them more than life itself, until you have felt that weight, don't give us your advice or tell us what should happen. You can't know, and we don't have the energy to help you understand right now.

Windshield Views

I had to swing by the pet store on my way home yesterday, and my trip was delayed by these friends:
I have never seen geese move more slowly, but I didn't mind letting them cross.

This however:

I got caught in one of the worst storms I've ever been out in picking up Issa yesterday. The worst hit while I was parked, thankfully, but I did not enjoy watching hail hit my windshield. I'm hoping for a much drier pick-up today!

A Weekend of Dance

We had our first Monarch Recital this weekend! Issa and I did the smoothest dress rehearsal ever on Friday night. I always love to watch the polishing and coaching that happens at this point:
My favorite dance was Issa's pointe dance. It is just so fun to watch her:
And she had fun doing the whole show:
The joy was palpable all weekend, and she loved being on stage with her friends.

We did manage to get some not awful family pictures:

And two of her friends cam to watch her do her thing:
Everyone came back to the house after for dinner, and we had the best time. Issa was flying high, and her friends are so fun!

Yesterday, we girls went to see Giselle:
It's Issa's favorite, and it did not disappoint!

We Did It Again

Every few months, Brad gets the bug to move furniture. Over the past few months, he has been turning the garage into his man cave, moving in his books and favorite chair. Creating more meditation and mat space. With summer coming, he decided it would be a good idea to move his whole office out there. We will be home more, and the lack of a door to the front room, which had been his office, often ends in frustration for all involved. Once he moved all of his work things out, we converted the front room back into a reading/music room again:
We moved in a chair:
And hung the Frog and Toad painting from Evan's nursery, which made us all very happy:
We still have a desk if Brad decides he wants to be inside for some reason, but the space is much more open:
And moving the chair made our living room feel bigger:
I have a feeling we will all enjoy the new format this summer!

A Weekend of Celebrating

This was a weekend full of celebrating! Class Day was really something special. I got to change the bow to the Victory Bow since the Crook was not found this year:
And deliver all of the gifts:
It really is a special moment. It was so lovely to spend the afternoon with the class I advised, and I was surprised how many of them I really knew. Since I work with them in little groups, I didn't realize just how many of them there were. In the highest compliment college kids can give, the officers kicked in to give me an Olive Garden gift card, which was a total surprise. And this moment:
I won't lie. I cried. I've never been so tired at the end of a year, but I'm so glad I got to help them end their senior year well.

Saturday I was back on campus at 7am to set up for graduation one:

Graduation two got a little rainy, but we made it, and the hooding was a complete success! I was home by 6, where I promptly melted into the couch.

Yesterday was my Mother's Day, and my family spoiled me. I never left the bed room! All three meals--and snacks!--were delivered to bed. They got new cat toys to entice my felines to spend the day with me:

Everyone rotated throughL
Issa and I also watched a stupid amount of Vampire Diaries:
They got be good wine and excellent olive oil. It really was a perfect day and exactly what I needed.
