This blog won't capture the major milestones of life. Instead, this is the place where I hope to capture the little day to day realities of life...the little things that I want to remember when the little handprints have faded away.

Frogs!
You may remember that this little man turned two last weekend. Last week, Aunt Tay Tay, the kids' Godmother, called to apologize for the gift that was on its way. She later sent me a message asking how far away a pet shop was, but I assumed she was joking. Even when I saw the box on our porch labelled "Live Fish," I thought she was joking. When the kids opened the box, I realized she was, in fact, not joking. The box had a little aquarium complete with gravel, a plant, a rock, two African dwarf frogs, and a snail. The kids and I frantically assembled the aquarium.

Happy Mother's Day to me!
I also want to share the treasures that came home from school; they make me smile every time I see them. You may recall the great bulb debacle that came home a few weeks early. (It has been safely transplanted to the garden, by the way.) Well...these little seedlings came home Friday. Issa isn't quite sure what they are, so we will see.

Happy Birthday, Sweet Boy!
So, I may have mentioned a time or a million that Evan loves dogs. Consequently, he took a dog cupcake cake to school yesterday...
This one I did not make. School rules say it must be purchased--fair enough. This one, however, I did make:

The Good, The Ugly, and the Terribly Sad
As you may recall, my original dissertation blew up. The good news (actually, great news) is that it has now taken a new and far more interesting form. I spent several hours this week rewriting chapter one of the dissertation, and I'm quite pleased with it. The picture above is the visual representation. I know it looks a little ugly and blank. When I showed Brad, he looked at me like perhaps it was time I talk to a professional. It's actually very nuanced and makes perfect sense to me, and it got me writing--a very good thing.
Yesterday, I took chapter one to my participants to see if they agreed with what I was finding. This kind of member checking is so terrifying. There is a real risk they could say no and I am back to square one. Fortunately, they all agreed, and I got the highest compliment a researcher can get: "You really made me see this in a new way. You really get us--better than I did."
Even after all that, I got in the car and cried yesterday. My poor school is so under-resourced. I took colored Expo markers as a thank you yesterday, and two teachers actually got teary. Another teacher showed me her receipt file she keeps for tax purposes; some of the items should just be basic supplies for any teacher. Paper? Really? Teachers talked so openly about anxiety medications and the prayer they need to just get through they day. And yet they come...day after day...year after year...because they consider it their calling, their identity, and their "privilege." I am so humbled by these women.

Almost Birthday Time
it needed a tackle hug. I had to wait twenty minutes before he would hand it over long enough for me to even take the rest of the tags off.

Little Ducks
And...to add to Evan's exitement...his teachers had set up a mini-bounce house in their classroom since they won't be able to go outside. These kids are going to fall in love with rainy days. Maybe we'll bake cookies this evening as the crowning jewel.

Bittersweet Goodbye
At times this semester, I was worried for some of them. Last night, as I closed the book, I looked out at eight young women that I know will be fabulous teachers. I sent them to their classrooms with confidence in their abilities, reminding them this was not a true goodbye and that I would always be around if they needed to think something out. I was proud of them.
Then I got home and started unpacking my bag only to find several thank you notes tucked in the pocket. And then I cried. This is the bittersweet curse of teaching. You pour yourself into your students, see all that they become, and then say goodbye. This was a remarkable class, and I will truly miss them...and hope I see one of them in Issa or Evan's classroom someday.

A Few Notes on Gardening
- Compostable, plantable pots should not have plastic wrappers--it seems to defeat the purpose.
- If you give a toddler a hose, you will get wet.
- Girls can do anything boys can do.
- Never, ever, ever allow the toddler to carry a pot half full of dirt.
Let me explain. The kids and I went to pick up the plants that we don't start from seed yesterday. We ended up getting tomatoes, watermelon, cantaloupe, peppers, and mint. We pot
the tomatoes and mint, but the rest go straight in the garden. We were able to get all of the plants in the plantable pots, and Issa decided she really wanted to take the plastic off herself and plant them. My job was to dig the holes. As I was digging, I looked up just in time to see a pot explode in Issa's hands. I have no idea what happened, but the whole bottom was shredded, she was covered in dirt, and the plastic was still in tact. I looked at Evan, and he cracked up, which meant I cracked up, which meant we had a very unhappy Issa. She alternated fussing at the pot and us. We finally did get all of the plants in the ground, though, and Evan watered them in--and watered us in, too.

To Transplant or Not to Transplant
Fast forward to today, and this bulb is really doing well. I think it's a glad, but I'm not sure. I do know it s getting very tall. So...do I transplant it outside? It's not really the season to do so, but I doubt it will be very happy in this pot. It is a real bummer when a Mother's Day gift causes this much work.

Important Notes About Keys
- I still carry a key to my parents' home; I find it oddly reassuring.
- I have way too many discount cards on my key ring.
- The picture frame has pictures of my kids--none of which are from the past six months.
- The giant felt craft was a gift from Issa; it marks me as a mom from a mile away and makes mechanics laugh.
- These keys are far more useful if they are not locked in the van.
Yep...I locked my keys (and my phone) in the van when I took the kids to the library yesterday. Of course, I didn't notice until after we had checked out. Lovely. Librarians are notorious rule followers, so I had to plead to use the phone to call Brad, but they took pity on me and let me use the "Library Use Only" phone. Brad came to rescue us, and there are certainly worse places to be stuck. We sat outside on the big rocks and read stories and walked the tree-lined streets. It could be, and has been, worse: last year I locked my keys in my running van at the grocery store while Brad was in California. Fortunately, the kids were at school, I did have my phone, and we have AAA. Perhaps my next car should be one with the key pad on the outside...or perhaps I should just remember my keys.

Raining Blessings
"Issa, it looks like you might not get to play outside today after all."
"Why?"
"Because it's raining."
"Why didn't I bring an umbrella."
"Because the weatherman said it wasn't going to rain today."
"Why is it raining then?"
"Because God must have decided we needed it to make our grass green and the crops and flowers grow."
"I guess we shouldn't wish it away then. God knows what He's doing."
Gulp. Enough said.
Dear Lord, thank you for sending my daughter to remind me that you do know best, and the struggles and rainy days are according to Your plan and purpose. Amen.
